The 20-Second Fold: How a Brompton Folds

The fold is the whole point. Here's how a Brompton goes from ride-ready to a compact package in about 20 seconds.

A Brompton folds in four simple movements, and once it's muscle memory it takes about twenty seconds. The result is a package of roughly 58.5 × 56.5 × 27 cm - small enough for a train luggage rack, under a desk, or beside a café table.

First, lift the rear triangle and swing the back wheel under the frame; it clicks into place and the bike now stands on its rear roller wheels. Second, undo the main frame hinge clamp and fold the front wheel back to meet the rear - the two wheels sit side by side.

Third, loosen the handlebar catch and fold the bars down alongside the wheels. Fourth, release the seatpost clamp and drop the saddle, which locks the whole fold together. To unfold, you simply reverse the sequence.

The Advance Roller Wheels at every fold point mean a folded Brompton rolls like a small suitcase rather than being carried - a detail that makes the last mile through a station or office far easier.
